What is an apostille
An apostille is an additional certification of a signature and seal on a document, confirming its authenticity for use abroad. It is used between countries that are parties to the Hague Convention.
What an apostille looks like
An apostille can be a stamp placed directly on the document or a separate sheet titled “Apostille” attached to the document. In Estonia, an apostille is issued as a separate page attached to the original document.
NB! An apostille is issued only in the country where the document was issued. For example, documents issued in Estonia → apostille in Estonia, documents issued in another country → apostille in that country
Most frequently apostilled documents include birth and marriage certificates, diplomas and transcripts, criminal record certificates, court documents, powers of attorney
Apostille and translation — correct order

What is required for an apostille
To obtain an apostille, you usually need the original document with a real signature and seal. Copies and scans are not accepted. Laminated documents cannot be apostilled
In some cases, the receiving authority may also require an apostille on the sworn translator’s certification. It is always best to clarify requirements with the receiving institution in advance.
